Inside My VoyageLA Interview: Helping Kids Build Confidence in Math and Reading

Helping 6–10 Year-Olds Thrive in School

If your child is struggling in math or language arts, you’re not alone. Many bright, capable students hit roadblocks between first and fifth grade—when foundational skills are developing fastest. As a Beverly Hills–based tutor with over 20 years of experience, I’ve worked with countless families across Los Angeles who share the same goal: helping their children love learning again while building lasting academic confidence.

Recently, I had the opportunity to share my story and teaching philosophy in an interview with VoyageLA Magazine. You can read the full conversation here:

What We Talked About in the Interview

In the interview, I opened up about the real reasons children struggle—and how to change that story. Some of the key topics include:

  • Why children ages 6–10 often get “stuck” in math or reading, and how small misunderstandings can snowball if not caught early.
  • The power of individualized teaching: how I tailor lessons for each child’s learning style, personality, and confidence level.
  • Balancing high expectations with empathy: supporting high-achieving families who want their children to succeed without the stress.
  • How early wins create momentum: when kids feel capable, they start to enjoy learning—and results follow naturally.
  • Building lifelong learning habits: focusing not just on grades, but on curiosity, persistence, and self-belief.

These insights are especially valuable for parents of children between 6 and 10—the years that lay the foundation for middle school success.

Why Confidence Comes Before Content

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned in two decades of tutoring is that confidence drives learning. Children who believe they can improve are more willing to try, make mistakes, and grow. That’s why my sessions focus on encouragement, connection, and skill-building in equal measure.

When the learning process feels positive, children stop dreading homework—and start surprising you with what they can do.
